Why Windshield Sun Strips Matter in Dubai’s Heat

Look at the top of many car windshields, and you will see a coloured band, usually blue, green, or grey, that slowly fades into clear glass. This is the windshield sun strip, also called the tint band. It is not a fold-out sunshade or a sticker. On most cars, it is built into the glass at the factory.

This guide explains what the sun strip is, what it does, whether it is legal in the UAE, and what happens to it when you repair or replace your windshield.

What Is a Windshield Sun Strip?

There are two kinds of sun strip, and it helps to know which one your car has.

Factory Tint Band

This is part of the glass itself. Your windshield is made of two layers of glass with a thin plastic layer in between. On many cars, the top of that plastic layer is coloured, which creates the tint band. Because it is inside the glass, it cannot peel, scratch or fade.

Stick-on Tint Strip

This is a strip of dark film that some drivers add later to the outside or inside of the glass. It does a similar job, but it can bubble, peel or fade in strong sun over time.

If you run your finger across the band and feel no edge, it is almost certainly a factory windshield tint band.

What Does the Tint Band Do?

The main job of the windshield tint band is to cut glare. When the sun is low in the sky, it shines straight into your eyes over the top of the windshield. The tinted band softens that light so you can see the road more clearly.

This matters a lot in Dubai. Early morning and late afternoon drives often put the sun right in front of you, especially on long straight roads. Less glare means less eye strain and safer driving.

The band also blocks a little heat from the top of the glass, which can help keep the cabin slightly cooler. It does not do much for UV protection, because your windshield glass already blocks most harmful UV rays on its own.

Is a Windshield Sun Strip Legal in the UAE?

Yes, within limits. In the UAE, the front windshield of a private car must stay clear, with one exception: a sun strip along the very top of the glass.

A factory tint band that came with your car is fine. If you want to add a stick-on windshield tint strip, it must stay at the top and be narrow. Tint film across the rest of the windshield is not allowed. Side and rear windows can usually be tinted up to 50%.

Rules and fines can change, so check the latest guidance from the Dubai Police or the RTA before adding any film to your windshield.

Sun Strips and Windshield Replacement

The sun strip becomes important when your glass needs repair or replacement.

Matching the Tint Band

When you need a windshield replacement, the new glass should match the old one. That means the same shape, the same features and the same tint band. A windshield without the band, or with a band in a different colour, can look wrong and may bring back the glare you were used to avoiding. At Express Autoglass, we match your new windshield to your car, including the tint band, before we fit it.

If you have a stick-on strip, it will come off with the old glass and will need to be applied again on the new windshield.

Chips in the Tint Band

A chip in the tinted area can usually be repaired in the same way as a chip anywhere else, using resin and a special light. Because the band sits near the top edge of the glass, damage there is sometimes too close to the edge to repair safely. In that case, replacement is the better choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a windshield sun strip?

It is a tinted band along the top of the windshield. On most cars, it is built into the glass, but it can also be a stick-on strip added later.

2. What does the tint band on a windshield do?

It reduces glare from the sun, especially early in the morning and late in the afternoon, and blocks a little heat from the top of the glass.

3. Is a windshield sun strip legal in the UAE?

Yes, as long as it stays at the top of the windshield. The rest of the front glass must stay clear.

4. Can I add a windshield tint strip to my car?

Yes. A stick-on strip can be added to the top of the glass. Keep it narrow and check the current UAE rules before fitting it.

5. Can the factory tint band be removed?

No. It is inside the glass, between the two layers, so it cannot be peeled or scraped off.

6. Will my new windshield have a tint band?

It should, if your old one did. We match the replacement glass to your car, including the band and its colour.

7. Can a chip in the tint band be repaired?

Usually, yes. It is repaired like any other chip, unless it is too close to the edge of the glass.

8. Does the sun strip protect me from UV rays?

Only a little. Your windshield glass already blocks most UV rays. The sun strip is mainly there to cut glare.
